HISTORY
Saltwater Mill is a remarkable example of a sensitively restored historic mill, occupying an idyllic setting within about three acres of beautifully landscaped grounds on the edge of the Quoile Nature Reserve.
Believed to date from around 1740, the mill formed an important part of the local landscape for almost two centuries. Historical records suggest it was operated by James Newell Snr, a churchwarden at Inch Parish Church, and was uniquely powered by the tidal waters that flowed beneath the adjoining bridge to fill Finnebrogue Lake. This ingenious use of the tide sustained the mill’s operation for generations, serving the surrounding community until the mid-20th century. Local recollections also suggest that the building was utilised as a sawmill during the 1930s and 1940s.
The construction of the Quoile Barrage in the late 1950s brought an end to the tidal flow that had powered the mill for centuries. In doing so, it transformed the surrounding landscape and led to the creation of the magnificent Quoile Nature Reserve, which today provides an exceptional natural backdrop to the property.
Following the cessation of its industrial use, the mill remained largely untouched for almost fifty years, preserving many of its original features and character. It was subsequently acquired by dedicated custodians who undertook an extensive and painstaking restoration programme.
The building was carefully stripped back and comprehensively restored, with great attention paid to retaining its historice integrity while introducing the comforts and conveniences required for modern living.
Purchased by the current owners in 2001, Saltwater Mill stands today as a distinguished and highly individual residence, where centuries of history have been seamlessly combined with exceptional craftsmanship to create one of County Down’s most unique and captivating homes.
