Newtownforbes takes its name from the Forbes family, also known as the Earl of Granard, and have been resident in Castleforbes since 1691.
Newtownforbes is a popular residential location with an excellent Primary school, and modern GAA complex. The village has local shops, post office, restaurant and churches. Being on the N4 Dublin – Sligo Road there are bus stops along the main street. The village has an active tidy town group and recently helped develop a heritage & biodiversity trail walk that runs from the GAA complex in the village.
