Fibrus to bring gigabit broadband to more homes across NI

Northern Ireland’s leading Full Fibre broadband provider, Fibrus, has been awarded the contract to deliver Project Gigabit in Northern Ireland, a second major contract win for the business in the region to continue delivering fast, reliable broadband to every part of the country. 

The £34.6 million project is part of the UK government’s investment into Project Gigabit, to enable hard-to-reach communities to access fast, reliable, gigabit-capable broadband. It will bring Full Fibre to approximately 9,000 additional premises across rural towns in Northern Ireland targeting homes and businesses that are not included in commercial broadband plans.  

The Project Gigabit award follows Fibrus’ successful delivery of the £200 million Project Stratum contract, a UK Government and Department for the Economy-backed venture, which brought full fibre broadband to over 81,000 premises across Northern Ireland. 

The company’s continued partnership with government reflects its proven track record and deep-rooted commitment to regional development, with NI now boasting an impressive 95% access to gigabit-capable service, following the completion of Project Stratum.

High quality internet access is vital for our economy and wider society.  It is transformative for many households and businesses, enabling access to digital services, remote learning and work, and economic participation.  

At 94% gigabit capable coverage, the north is now the best connected part of these islands.  Building on this, Project Gigabit will extend this level of digital capacity to over 9,000 premises, further improving broadband infrastructure in predominantly rural areas. 

Digital connectivity is a vital enabler in building an inclusive, regional balanced economy.  This investment further positions the north as a leader in the availability of fixed line fibre optic services, underpinning our digital transformation, competitiveness, and innovation.
