Carna is located in the South of Connemara and boasts beautiful scenery-marrying rugged coastlines with countryside landscapes and mountains. The area is in the heart of the Gaeltacht and is famed for conserving its Irish roots-rich in traditional Irish music, boat building and of course, the Irish language itself. The area is host to a number of amenities including a hotel, nursing home, health centre, pharmacy, shops and pubs. The National University of Ireland has an Irish Language and educational centre in Carna and there is also a marine biology unit. A recent addition to the area is the newly built Immigration Centre in Carna, as a monument to honour the Irish immigrant and showcases the history of the area.
Mac Dara’s Island-which is a small island located of the Carna coast, is home to a wonderful, stone chapel, built by St. Mac Dara in the sixth century. This unique architectural feat was renovated in the 1970s and stands testament to the people of the area. Féile Mhic Dara is a festival held annually on the 16th of July honouring Connemara’s most respected saint with traditional music, a pilgrimage to the island and also a regatta for the stunning Galway Hooker boats and currach racing-an outstanding, one of a kind event not to be missed!
