Formerly the Lock keepers Cottage on the Lagan Canal which stretches for 27 miles from Belfast to Lough Neagh passing through 27 Locks. Built in the 18th century, it was one of the most successful commercial navigations in Ireland. The development of road and rail led to the demise of the Lagan Canal and its abandonment in the 1950’s.
The remains of the Lagan Canal is one of the region’s best assets as it passes through the cities of Belfast and Lisburn, traversing through rolling countryside and picturesque villages. It’s journey ends entering Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.
No 6 Goudy Bridge Road is situated at Lock 24 which was named after the nearby Goudy River. The house was built in the early 1900’s and used as the Lockkeepers cottage until just after 2nd world war around 1945/1946. The boats travelled from Belfast to Lough Neagh with potatoes and returned with wheat and maize.
From Lock 25 to Lock 19 the towpath is privately owned with no public access. Goudy Bridge has 2 arches, one for the boats and the smaller second arch allowed the horses through.
The flexible accommodation offers either 3 bedrooms and 1 reception room or 2 bedrooms and 2 reception rooms with the rural location giving peace and tranquility with superb views along the canal.
Access to the property is from Gowdy Bridge Road along a private concrete pathway edging the canal to double entrance gates which lead to the house and outbuildings. These were used as stables any barns.
The grounds extends to approximately 2 acres and is surrounded by woodland, trees , plants and shrubs.
